Indonesia August 2023

Back in Indonesia supposedly for another three month trip. Flew Citilink Perth to Jakarta. Spent a couple of days in Jakarta at Eva and Erik’s house.

Then went hiking up Kawah Ratu near Bogor. Ended up having the wrong concordance in Google Maps and went up to Puncak, which requires taking a left at Bogor rather then a right to Kawah Ratu. A three hour trip ended up taking six hours. We had lunch at Puncak, which was nice. Camped the night then hiked up to the active Kawah Ratu.

After Kawah Ratu we returned to Jakarta then went down to Bandung for a couple of nights. Evy and her family went up to Thailand for around 10 days. Was very hot as it was wet season there.

I rode my bike from Bandung down to Pameungpeuk and stayed at Villagio, which has ended up being the best hotel I have stayed at around this area. Surf was 4-6ft everyday and was starting to get back into form when I did a subluxation (partial dislocation) on my left shoulder. Happened when I was on my new surfboard the JS Raging Bull and a section was going to close out so I thought I would turn on the face of the wave and punch through the back however the board didn’t respond how I thought it would and I am not sure what happened next but my arm was twisted and when I went to get back on my board I felt the bones go back into the sockets. I have had this issue a few times where this board doesn’t respond as I think it will. Couldn’t lift my left arm and even had to lift may arm up and put it on the motor bike handle, was worried about riding but seemed OK once I was on the bike.

Rode the bike a couple of hours from Pameungpeuk to Gunung Papandayan. Was a nice ride up through the mountains some really nice jungle and tea plantations. Meet Evy and Erief at Gunung Papandayan and stayed a night at a cottage at the mountain base camp. The next day we hiked up the mountain taking a spur off to check out a steaming fumarole with sulfur around it.

Rode back to Pameungpeuk and spent a week hanging out trying to rehabilitate my shoulder. I have been attempting to do the exercises I found on the web, shoulder and upper arm are still very sore. Have paddled in the river at Sancang a couple of times and am starting to be able to paddle again but still not back in the water. Evy is doing her sunate natal in Sumadang.

Rode the bike again from Pameungpeuk to Cisurupan in the Garut Regency. Meet Evy and Erief at the Singgasana Cipelah Cottages, Garut Regency. The next day we hiked half way up Gunung Cikuray with our guide, Erief stated in the hotel which was just as well as it was a tough day. There are six posts in total, we camped a post 3, which was a pleasant grassy camp site. There was a group of young men hiking as well, which kept Evy entertained . She got on well with them. Two o’clock the next morning we woke up and started hiking up to the summit leaving the tent erected. Evy was feeling unwell but got better as she went. I was feeling unwell and got worse through out the day. Not sure if it was something I ate or the low oxygen. Arrived at the summit around dawn.

Evy and Erief joined me for a few days in Pameungpeuk and then they went back to Jakarta and Evy, Erief and Ibu went to Perth. Started paddling in the river at Sancang and finally after a few days went out for a surf. Unfortunately the surf has often been too big. I rode down to Batukeras and spent four nights at Pondok Rivana our usual hotel. Surfed one day at the point which was better than I thought it would be on the short board. Was good to have a cold beer and some veterinarian dishes. Meet an Austrian women who was good to talk with after being speaking Indonesian all the time was a good change. Rode down to Pangandaran hoping to surf the beach breaks, which looked OK but too big and no one out so I didn’t bother.

I rode back to Pameungpeuk as the surf is looking to better there. Surf was better but with several days of being too big. Jajang came and picked me up and drove directly to Jakarta. Eva and I went to immigration to extend my passport visa. Had to go back to Eva’s place to get some long pants. Evy arrived and we set off to Gunung Cerermai home stay. Stayed the night and then piled into a small pickup and driven up to Post 0. The trail from Post 0 up to Post 4 was really nice in dense rain forest before changing into a crumbled dusty open trail. Trekked up to Post 8 and put up the tent. I stuck with my own food after having the shits on previous mountain treks and was OK but Evy really got the shits which stuck around for a week or so. In the morning we hiked up to the summit leaving the tents at Post 8. Was a good hike up but the air was getting thin as we climbed to 3000m. I felt unwell at the top and was seeing stars so was happy to get back down to the campsite. When we got back down we all went and stayed at a hotel in Majalenka. Then went to Bandung via Sumedang. Bilis didn’t seem to have any trouble remembering who I was. Next day we went back to Jakarta to attend a wedding.

After the wedding we returned to Pameungpeuk, the surf was pumping and stayed good for a week. Took Evy to Sancang on the back of the bike which went well. Evy and Erief returned to Bandung and then back to Jakarta and finally back to Perth. I stayed in Pameungpeuk and kept surfing. Swell forecasts have been very unpredictable, 3-5ft was 4-6ft+ and 5-7ft was 3-5ft.
